A profound comprehension of soil mechanism is important for building correct constitutive model and engineering application. In the first part of this paper, the research status of the strength and structure of cohesive soil was reviewed, the existing strength criterion and failure criteria were introduced, and the relationship between each criterion and the switch method in the finite element calculation were analyzed. Through the study of mineral composition and basic characteristics of cohesive soil, various mechanisms influencing the strength were discussed, the connections of various strength parameters of cohesive soil were considered from the microcosmic aspect, and the micro-structure of soil strength mechanisms was analyzed. Through the combination between the soil contact model and the plasticity theory, an elasto-plastic constitutive model has been established.For soil slope, a good understanding of soil mechanism helps correctly analyse slope stability. In the second part of this paper, soil slope stability was studied according to the strength mechanism and acting method of the cohesive soil. The factors, failure mechanism and stability analysis methods of cohesive soil slope stability were analyzed, the principles of the strength reduction finite element method and limit equilibrium method were discussed, and the differences between the two methods were pointed out. The principle and existing problems of the strength reduction finite element method analyzing slope stability were studied, and it pointed out that the strength parameters c andφshould adopt different reduction factors. Meanwhile, when the strength parameters of the soil are reducted, the related stiffness parameters should be correspondingly reducted too.In this paper, the method of adjusting the reduction factors and stiffness parameters was deduced out, and through the sensitivity analysis of parameters of soil, strength reduction method with different reduction factors adjusting the stiffness parameters was obtained. The rationality and validity of the above method were proved using finite element software through an example. The results showed that the above method was more accurate than that without adjusting the reduction factors and stiffness parameters, and the method could provide meaningful reference for improving the strength reduction finite element method. The strength reduction finite element methods adjusting stiffness parameters and reduction factors was preliminarily promoted, which can be applied to the actual complex inhomogeneous slope engineering. And it provided an effective and reasonable way for solving practical engineering problems.
