More and more attention is paid to the mortise and tonon joint by those workers and the scholars who repair the old architectures, for the traditional architectures have stayed firm and stable through long term transition of the history and the earthquakes. As the special structure, the affect of the mechanism of the mortise and tenon plays an important role for the structure. That joint as the semi rigid, can stand certain load and show certain deformation, which proves the good ductility and energy dissipation. Therefore, it's important for the protection of the traditional architecture to do the research on the mechanism of the mortise and tenon joint. This paper provides some experiment results and numerical analysis of the static property of mortise and tenon joint, two typical kinds of mortise and tenon joints are chosen to carry the joint experiment and finite analysis with frictional contact. Moreover, to study the mechanical property of the whole framework with mortise and tenon joint, the existing traditional timber framework is taken as example to work out the finite element analysis result.Firstly, finite element modeling the loading condition and damage system of mortise and tenon joint provides some quantized data for the experiment.Secondly, the experiment result shows the load-displacement curve under vertical loading condition and affect of different parameters to the joint rigidity. Some research is done to study how different span, thickness and type of tenon impact the joint's mechanical property.Thirdly, finite element modeling the existing timber framework analyzes the influence of mortise and tenon joint and studies the loading capacity of the whole framework. Considering the damage and deformation, some works is done to find out the weak element of the structure and give advice to the maintenance of traditional structure.
