This thesis carried out a deep study on the river sediment for the siltation problem in Ningbo. The basic physical and chemical properties, including mineral composition, particle size distribution, heavy metals and organic matter content of river sediment from 10 different sampling points and different depth in Sanjiang, were analyzed. The results show that Ningbo Sanjiang River sediment is clayey powdery material. The mineral composition are admittedly complicated but no major fluctuations. Considered the composition and basic properties of the river sediment, we proposed to produce sintered brick with the river sediment.Considering the need of building energy saving market, we proposed the technical route of preparing the light-weight wall-bricks with EPS grain and the river sediment from Sanjiang of Ninbo. We successfully made the light-weight wall-bricks by the study of mixed technology, the ratio and the sintering system. The strength grade achieved to MU10, bulk density is 1.31g/cm3, thermal conductivity is lower than 0.65W/(m-K). This kind of light-weight wall-bricks will be competitive in the market.Furthermore, this thesis also carried out a study on the possible environmental problems which may be caused by the industrialization development of this project. Using the river sediment and EPS grain as raw materials to produce light-weight wall-bricks, the smoke products from the manufacturing were investigated. In the research of using river sediment as building materials, We firstly have adopted continuous extraction to test the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in the smoke products. The results show that improperly sintering will bring a large amount of PAHs in the smoke products. The PAHs include Naphthalene, Fluorene, Anthracene, Phenanthrene, Pyrene and so on. And suitable selection of additive and reaction atmosphere will bring improvement on the smoke products. Finally, we also did the testing on the content of the dioxins, which has been considered as one of the most poisonous compounds. The results show that the content of dioxins from the smoke products is considerably lower than the safe standard range of environment. These will provided strong reference and guidance to the industrialization development of using river sediment to produce sintered brick.
