Retarder which is widely used in bus, track and luxury coach is a auxiliary braking device when the vehicle is on the slowing down or downhill braking .It effectively reduce the mechanical braking caused wear , fever and even brake failure. At present eddy current and hydraulic retarder are the main products. These two kinds of retarder although have played a smooth braking effect, but there are complicated structure, and high cost shortcomings. And reduced kinetic energy turns into heat energy wasted away. To solve the above problems, now we are carrying on the research about a new kind of permanent magnetic retarter, which belong to the energy storage type. This permanent magnetic retarter has small volume, light weight, simple structure and big smooth braking torque. It also has an advantage in turning kinetic energy into electric energy which can be stored in storage device and then discharging the stored energy from starting or moving the vehicle.The permanent magnet retarder body is not only the core, but also the key in the permanent magnet retarder system. Therefore, the design of the body is main part of this paper. First of all, we analysis the working theory and several energy storage ways. It is design basis. Second, discuss the electric magnet design of the permanent magnet retarder body. To reduce the burden of manual calculation and guarantee the accuracy of the calculation. By programming the calculation software about the design parameters of the electric magnetic by VB6.0 language. We get a satisfactory result for optimizing the permanent magnet retarder by cycling design calculation and matlab simulation .Finally, a brief analysis of energy storage permanent magnet retarder control system is present, the basic control framework is introduced, and the simulation experiment is made. This study focuses on the permanent magnet retarder design, including main structure parameters, windings, the stator and the rotor slot type and permanent magnets scheme. In the design, the fitting method, interpolation method and so on, many kinds of numerical calculation method ware used for optimizing the permanent magnet retarder design.So far, energy storage permanent magnet retarder in the market is not mature. But permanent magnet retarder and regenerative braking theoretical research have made certain progress. This is basic for energy storage permanent retarder research. With the development of transportation and the rapid reduction of petrifaction energy, the energy storage permanent magnet retarder used in the vehicle would become better and better and guides the development of the retarder.
