Wind energy is renewable energy which attracts highest attention in the world, many countries invest lost of cost to develop to utilize wind energy. With more and more WGS connect to the grid, the fluctuation of wind turbine output power(caused by wind speed fluctuation) make seriously affect to stability of grid. Using appropriate energy storage device in grid can reduce the affect of wind power fluctuation to the power grid. Flywheel energy storage (FESS) technology is a skill which takes the high-speed rotation of flywheel as storage carrier. This skill transforms electrical energy into kinetic energy and stores on the flywheel. When lacking of energy, storage system transforms kinetic energy into electrical energy and releases. Flywheel energy storage is simple, efficient and pollution-free storage technology. It. is attractive to the industrial storage field.Currently, the common large wind turbine kinds are double fed and direct drive. This paper selects a potential variable speed and constant frequency wind turbine:direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG).Firstly, based the analysis of the theory of PMSG and pitch control strategy, this paper established the model of wind generator using Simulink. Then simulated the model and analysis the charge and discharge process.Secondly, basing on the principle of FESS which discussed in the paper, established the model of FESS and simulated the model.After built the models (PMSG and FESS), connected the FESS to direct-drive PMSG with dual PWM control strategy, and then choose the charging and discharging control scheme based on characteristics of FESS. Finally simulated and analyzed the effect of smoothing wind output power depending FESS, and changed some performance parameters of FESS, analyzed the influence on out power smoothing because of changing parameters.
