A tailing pond is the industrial structure which is used to stack mining tailings. However, a tailing pond is a major source of hazards and pollution from the point of view of safety and environment. Once the pond breaks, great harms are brought to people's lives and property at lower reaches and serious environment pollution is caused. Tailings break accidents occur frequently in the world, domestic tailings dam failure was a disaster-prone state in recent years. For example, the NO. 5 tailings pond of Western Group in Haicheng city in 2007 and Xinta tailing pond in Xiangfen city in 2008 broke one after another, which have caused heavy casualties and serious environmental pollution. The investigation of tailing pond accidents at home and abroad shows that tailings dam instability is one of major causes for tailing ponds break and other tailing accidents. Therefore, it is a main way to prevent the tailing pond failure by analyzing stability of tailings dam correctly and adopting reinforced measures.The variability of parameter such as the cohesive force, angle of internal friction, bulk specific gravity and so on, and uncertainty of pore-water pressure, which influend anti-sliding stability of tailings dam, are analyzed. Monte Carlo method is used to analyze and to evaluate stability of tailings dam, the reliabiltiy analysis method is erected. The main research and conclusions are as follows.(1) Main types and characteristics of tailings dam are summarized, the current conditions of research and development at home and abroad for analysis of tailings dam stability are reviewed, the basic principles and methods of the limit equilibrium theory and reliability analysis are introduced.(2) The uncertainty factors are discussed, which affect dam stability in the reliability analysis from two aspects: internal factors and external factors. The basic random variables are determined and the statistical method of random variables is introduced.(3) Based observing data of pore-water pressure and geotechnical tests, reliability analysis method is built by adapting Monte Carlo method. Drawing on the relevant norms of structural engineering, evaluation criteria of tailings dam reliability for industrial buildings was Recommend, which lays the solid foundation on anti-sliding stablity analysis for tailings dam. (4) The anti-sliding stability of Dumulong tailings dam is analyzed and evaluated, and sensitivity of main parameters is analyzed, its anti-sliding satiblity factor is calculated and corresponding reliability index is given, Dumulong tailings dam is in the critical stable from the results. Pore water pressure is the disadvantage of influence dam stability factors from the sensitivity analysis of random variables, improvement suggestions of strengthening the dam drainage measures are provided.Researching methods given in the paper can be used to analyze and evaluate other similar tailings dam stability against sliding.
