Based on the low liquid limit soil which is get from DaGuang Expressway of HeBei province, this paper primarily used the laboratory test to concentrate on further studying on the engineering characteristics of the low liquid limit soil to develop the guidelines for construction. The main contents of the dissertation are as followings:(1)A mineralogy study is conducted for the natural soils with X-ray diffractometer in order to determine the mineral presents and their distribution, with emphasis on describing compaction mechanism and laws of low liquid limit soil through scanning electron microscope (SEM).(2)The physical properties of low liquid limit soil show that it should be named not only by liquid limit and the plastic limit water content, but also by other methods of naming.(3)A lot of laboratory test mostly dissects the engineering properties of low liquid limit soil from mechanical properties, water physical properties and dynamical properties with triaxial apparatus, plane strain apparatus, capillary apparatus and dynamic triaxial apparatus. It is indicated that the degree of compaction of the fill material must not be less than 93%, while a rigorous control of its moisture at the moment of compaction should be conducted for the range of-2 to+2 percent of soils optimum moisture content.(4)After analyzing the effects of the water content and compactness to the engineering properties through soil test indoor, it testifies that, for the freeway embankment, double index control method of the compactness and the air volume rate is feasible and the control index is proposed, while six-percent lime mixtures can effectively improve the engineering properties of low liquid limit soil.
