As modern construction machinery advancing the direction of high speed, high accuracy and the lightweight, vibration and noise problems have become increasingly serious, and it not only limits the product features, but also pollutes the environment, undermines the operator's physical and mental health. Meanwhile, with the scientific and technological development, the demand to the product performance increasing, the product structure growing complexity, we must ensure that the structure system has good dynamic characteristics. At this time, we need the dynamic analysis of structural systems to ensure the stability of product performance, and the low vibration and noise of the equipments. The combination of the finite element method and experimental modal analysis methods is the trend of the research of modern dynamic design. In this paper, with the FEM as the theoretical guidance and the modal analysis as the the main line, the dynamic characteristic of the 4120S diesel sump is analyzed completely, and the constraint mode of the oil-shell system is calculated with different filling ratios and different shell thickness, to find the optimization scheme of the oil sump, and then demonstrates the practical optimization effect.Firstly, the free modal analysis of the oil pan with different filling ratios is completed with the mathematical model by the software of Proe and Ansys; Then, the experimental modal analysis of the oil pan is performed, which is the free modal analysis of the diesel sump by use of LMS's multi-channel vibration-analysis system in Belgium, the calculated and measured results were analyzed, which verifies the correction of the finite element model and filling approach. The combination of the finite element method and experimental modal approach emphasizes the combination of theory with practice, increases the reliability of the results, lays the foundation for further analysis. Secondly, the operational modal analysis of the dry sump is operated, and further the effect of the filling ratios and the thickness of the shell on the oil-shell system. Finally, by the comparison of results, the structural improvement scheme for the diesel sump is proposed, and the improvement effect is further demonstrated by the modal theory and the transient dynamics.
