Cold-formed thin-walled steel framing is a new steel structural system, has been on a rapidly increasing scale and has been used for residential building widely in the world, but its research and application has just been on the stage of start-up in our counry. In order to promote the application of cold-formed thin-walled steel framing in residences, especially in multi-storey residences for our country, according to the application and research of cold-formed thin-walled steel framing both at home and abroad, this paper makes a series of researches on the cold-formed thin-walled steel framing, and focuses on analyzing the seismic performance of this system. The study emphases, method and conclusions of the investigation are listed as following. The composition of mid-rise cold-formed thin-walled steel framing is investigated at first. According to constructional characteristic of system, force transfer ways of this system under vertical load and later load are analyzed in detail, this method can be referred by designers and researchers.Vertical stability of composite wall of cold-formed thin-walled steel framing is researched theoretically, according to the stability theory and calculation, mechanics model of composite wall is established. The calculative formulas of buckling loads of stud braced by both side wallboards on the ground of simpled boundary have been solved by balance method. The calculative formulas of buckling load of stud braced by both side wallboards on the ground of other boundary have been solved by enery method.Three-dimensional model of cold-formed thin-walled steel framing of 2-6-storeies residential building is established using the SAP2000 program to study the mode of the system. The results indicate that cold-formed thin-walled steel residential building has a well integral behavior, the weight of this system is light, the stiffness of the structure is great. The time history response of cold-formed thin-walled steel framing of 2-6-storeies under horizontal earthquake action is studied. The seismic behavior of cold-formed thin-walled steel framing of different floors is studied under different horizontal earthquake action. The results indicate that this system is affected by seismic wave and storey, elastic angular displacement and plastic angular displacement of cold-formed thin-walled steel framing of 2-6-storeies in the line with our national code, this structural system of this paper is appropriate to be used in six-storey residences and the maximum height is 18m where the seismic fortification intensities are 8 and below.
