As the development of social and economic, people's demand for water is increasing, water shortage and uneven temporal and spatial distribution issues are also increasingly prominent, to solve these problems, the domestic large-scale and long-distance water supply works are more and more, which leads to a variety of water problems, the most common is the water hammer phenomenon, especially the water hammer of pump stopping happened in pressure pipes. Head loss along the pipe is an important factor in the transient process and an important part of the study of water hammer, therefore, this paper starts from the factors which change the head loss to analyze the influences over head loss along pipe to water hammer and its protection.1. In summing up previous studies, briefly described the water hammer calculation model and basic idea of the computer algorithm based on characteristics algorithm.2. Systematic discussed the theory and calculation method of the head loss, from which derived the influencing factors of head loss, and compared the degree of influence of various factors, fingered out that pipe diameter change is the main reason caused head loss along pipe changes in projects.3. Take two engineering for examples, changed the head loss along pipe by changing pipe diameter, carried on the hydraulic transient calculation under different head loss along pipe, analyzed and compared the effects on pump stopping water hammer of different head loss along pipe, indicated the advantages and disadvantages of head loss along pipe: advantage is that it's good for helping reduce water hammer and safe operation of pipelines, disadvantage is that it's likely to cause waste of water head. Finally proposed what is worth learning and what should pay attention to when the head loss along the way changed in the water hammer protection.
