Trains with the rolling stock of electronic multiple unit (EMU) have been operated in a number of classical railway lines. The operation of EMU trains not only increases train types, but also enlarges the speed difference between trains. Thus, this change decreases the application ability of existing capacity assessment methods.Aiming at this issue, this thesis mainly conducts research from three perspectives: (1) we first reviewed the state of the art of capacity assessment and then we analyzed the definition of railway line capacity and corresponding factors. After this, we proposed a timetabling feasible solution based capacity assessment method (TFSC). Detailed mathematical fonnulations for train timetabling and solution approach were also put forward. (2) we then analyzed the impacts of train operation structure on line capacity from train timing, headways and train bundling perspectives. (3) we finally gave a case study of "Yingtan-Xiangtang" section in Nanchang railway bureau. By means of TFSC method, we computed the line capacity for this section. After this, we analyzed the existing train timetable on July 1,2008, and then we computed the utilization rate of this section. We also studied the impacts of the operation of EMU trains on the line capacity of this section. Finally, we proposed suggestions and measures to improve utilizing the line capacity of "Yingtan-Xiangtang" section.
