As the diversity of micro-sources and intermittent and uncertainty of its power output, the complexity for control methods of converters and other reasons make the cause of power quality for the microgrids and distribution systems with microgrids have many new features. As more microgrids are connected to distribution systems, the power quality problems caused by microgrids may become one of the main factors which restrain its development. For such problems, this paper established mathematical model of multiple sources, including micro-turbines, wind power generator, fuel cells on PSCAD/EMTDC environment, and built rectifier/inverter model with its control model which is commonly used for micro-sources. The paper formed various types of micro-sources into microgrid, through the analysis of power quality characteristics on interconnected operation and isolated operation. The paper proposed some methods improving power quality. The paper also uses power quality compensation devices as active filters, passive filters, and unified power quality controllers. By comparison of simulation results of power quality before and after these power quality compensation devices were equipped. The paper proposed scope and occasions of application of these devices. The results show that the proposed methods can improve the power quality of microgrid effectively.
