With the implementation of the strategy of the development of the western regions and the project for delivering electricity from the west to the east,China is constructing hydropower projects and developing hydropower resources very quickly. A batch of world-class high concrete dams have being constructed in western part of China,but that area is a high intensity seismic zone.The adopted design level of earthquake ground motion reaches to eight degree, specially at some dam sites reaches nine degree. Aseismic analysis and safety evaluation of high concrete dams are key technical matters for hydroelectric development.The present thesis was supported by the national natural science foundation of China. Model test of high arch dam was carried out by using the electric-hydraulic underwater seismic simulated servo system at the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, Dalian University of Technology. The seismic failure mechanism, fracture morphology and the overload capacity of a high concrete arch dam were studied. The main contents are discussed as follows:1. In order to get ideal model material for the high concrete arch dam model test,the mechanical properties of emulation concrete inverted by Dalian University of Technology was further researched. Test on compressive strength and tensile strength of emulation concrete were performed with the electric material experiment machine.2.The integrated and jointed high concrete arch dam dynamic model tests were performed at the shaking table by using the emulation concrete material. The earthquake was simulated by using the El Centra wave and the Chinese Seismic Code Wave. The natural frequencies, accelerations, strains, displacements, admittance and the damage behavior of the model dams were analyzed in order to study the seismic failure mechanism of the high concrete arch dam.
