Parallel computation of finite element method(FEM) is an important development trend. Among the parallel computer architecture, networked cluster of workstations (COW) has shown its attractiveness and flexibility gradually. This thesis mainly studies finite elment analysis using pallell computation method. A parallel direct solution algorithm for linear equations is studied and practiced. With the parallel multifrontal method of sectioned substructures, a parallel code is improved and applied in 3-D finite element of stage loading of the concrete-faced rockfill dam(CFRD).The main contents of this thesis are as follows:Firstly a practical computing platform of local area network (LAN) clusters system is set up. Considering the complexity and cost of high performance computer(HPC) could not be afforded by most users, several personal computers of the staff room are used to built cluster system and the parallel programming environment based on Windows XP operating system and the MPI-2 message passing standard is realized.Then the parallel multifrontal method and its implementation in structure analysis in COW system is studied. The original structure is divided into several substructures, each computing node stores relevant substructure mesh data and other information. Frontal method is used to independently condense equations of super-elements of initially divided substructures, and then the equations are assembled and solved in master node. For computing the displacement of internal node, back substitution which can be regarded as an inverse procedure of condensation is implemented.Finally a parallel code of CFRD is improved by using the multifrontal parallel processing technology. The program is applied to simulate the rockfill materials nonlinear deformation characteristics of Shuibuya CFRD in construction stage filling. The parallel computing result shows that the algorithm is doable and effective.
