Study On The Ship Form And Resistance Performance Of Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger

Shipbuilding and shipping industry suffered a heavy blow in the 2008 financial crisis. But dredging market outperforms other industries with rising demand. A prosperous dredging market creates a vast market prospects for dredging equipment. Because of its excellent adaptability, trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) is favored by the major dredging companies.Middle-small size TSHD has excellent mobility and adaptability which make it very popular on the market. In recent years middle-small size TSHD has developed rapidly abroad, the economic performance of new ship form is superior. This paper analyzed statistics of Co. IHC's middle-small size TSHD in last 20 years and investigated the development from the main dimensions, hull form and power arrangement.In addition, with the development of ship computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computing capability, ship design with numerical simulation has become a study focus. This paper apply the commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT to simulate the resistance and viscous flow with free surface around a big size TSHD by solving RANS equation and then compared the experiment results and numerical results. To find an appropriate numerical simulation method for TSHD, implicit and explicit VOF schemes are compared and three turbulence model including RNG k-εmodel,Realizable k-εmodel And SST k-ωmodel Are compared. After comparison explicit VOF scheme and SST k-ωturbulence model Are chosen. Using this method, the old type middle TSHD and new type middle TSHD in the paper are compared both in deep water and shallow water. By comparing the resistance and flow field, this paper provided a reference for the design of new form middle-small size TSHD.
