The induction motor is the main power source for the modern industry. Induction motor start-up performance is one main concern. When the induction motor is started using the traditional step-down method, the resulting large current will bring about adverse impacts on the power grid, loads, and the motor itself.Voltage soft starter operates with thyristor mode, by changing the thyristor firing angle to achieve the ends of the stator winding induction motor voltage adjustment to implement asynchronous motor voltage ramp start, current limit start and other functions. Reliable and stable soft starter with little impact on the power grid will become the next generation induction motor starter in the domestic market.This paper is based on an oil-to-coal project from Anqing Branch of Sinopec fertilizer plant. This paper is aimed to provide theoretical basis for the soft starter selection. The mathematical model of the induction motor is explained, and the motor parameters analyzed. Soft starter can effectively reduce the starting current and stabilize starting torque. In this sense, soft start is a good starting method.Finally, Victoria SOLCON, which is made in Israel, is selected as the soft starter according to project requirements, costs, and maintenance expenses. The control method is also proposed.
