With the social economic development, increasing urbanization level and limited fresh water resources, water distribution system, which is the important fundamental infrastructure, should be taken a reform in management level. In this process, pressure management in water distribution system and leakage control has attracted more and more attention of researchers from worldwide.Firstly, based on analyzing and summarizing the results of domestic and international research on water balance and leakage indexes, the definition of each section for calculation of water balance is discussed and related mathematical expression is built. The distribution system leakage situation is evaluated based on international indicators.Secondly, minimum night flow model, which is applied to estimate night losses and daily losses, is established. The discrepancy and accuracy of estimated results are assessed by comparing with hydraulic simulation results. Through the analysis, the fundamental principles are found to build the leakage model.Thirdly, in order to get the leakage information and spatial distribution, a leakage model is established through EPANET software by combining water balance model, minimum night flow leakage model and hydraulic simulation model. Through repeated iteration of the model, leakage depending on pressure is distributed to each node and each pipe. Thus the spatial distribution of leakage of the network can be acquired. Finally, the leakage model is applied to a real distribution system in the administrative region of northern China. The leakage situation is evaluated and pipes with highly risk in leakage are estimated. Comparing the estimated leakage pipes with real leakage results, the results indicate that the leakage model can be well used in the leakage analysis and be practical to use for the management of pressure in distribution system.
