Shell structure as the application was one of the most common form of spatial structure. It was used in all kinds of large public buildings: such as airports, railway stations, stadiums and so on. Its stiffness, light weight, structural changes in various forms to meet people on long-span high-performance requirements of the spatial structure, but stability of the single-layer spherical lattice shells design is the most crucial problem. Presently most of the shell structure only considered the impact of geometric nonlinearity, and form a single section. Comparison of the stability of single-layer shell under dual non-linear and open, closed sections of two different forms is not enough; in research the stability of single-layer spherical lattice shells, we can refer to the national "grid rules" (JGJ612003) and the Shanghai "Technical Specification of space grid structure" (DG/TJ08-52-2004), Difference between the two procedures is also a lack of related research. In this paper, Laoshan Velodrome spherical lattice shell, for example, Comparison of the stability of single-layer shell under dual nonlinearity and only the geometric nonlinearity will be carried out. The original H beam cross-section will be replaced by circular hollow cross-section. To evaluate the bearing capacity of two sections, we ensure the case of equal volume of steel. In addition, two procedures were used to calculate the stability of the shell, and by reliability analysis, we evaluate the merits of two different algorithms. The results show that: the plastic ultimate bearing capacity of single-layer spherical lattice shell is 50% smaller than the elastic one on average, which indicats that it is necessary to consider the material nonlinearity when designing the stability of single-layer spherical lattice shell. Under the condition of equal volume of the steel, the bearing capacity of circular hollow steel sections are 1.3 times higher than the H beam cross sections on average. With the span ratio and the span increasing, the reliability of single-layer spherical lattice shell gradually decreased, but the reliability calculated based on the national "grid rules" (JGJ612003) is always higher than the Shanghai "Technical Specification of space grid structure" (DG/TJ08-52-2004).
