The optimal design of electromagnetic devices has always been the research hotspot of the computational electromagnetics , especially with the development of the modern computer and the digital analysis technology. The target of the optimal design is to solve the source parameters, structural parameters or medium parameters in accordance with the requirement of the electromagnetic field information and related characteristics of a system or device. The process is based on the electromagnetic computation, but has its own characteristics and is much more complicated, for it often has constraints, uncertain solution and needs optimization calculation. This paper explores the general approach to solve the optimal design of electromagnetic devices and takes practical examples to verify the feasibility of the schemes.The goal of optimal design of electromagnetic devices usually involves the static characteristics and the dynamic characteristics. It is worth noting that the dynamic characteristics is not about the electromagnetic parameters but about the movement of the devices. For the optimization of the static characteristics, this paper studies these two problems, the coreless actuator and the Loney's solenoid. And for the optimization of the dynamic characteristics, this paper studies the problem of the repulsion agency. The coreless actuator and the Loney's solenoid don't involve the movement, and has no optimal target of the movement, so it is easier to solve than the repulsion agency. These two problems are very suitable for studying the optimization theory and methods. The optimization of the repulsion agency is not only about the electromagnetic characteristics but also about the dynamic characteristics, so its solving process need couple with the movement and it brings much more trouble. As a very hot practical engineering problem, it is very suitable to explore the practical optimal methods in engineering.With respect to the number of optimization goal, the optimization problem can be divided into mono-objective optimization and multi-objective optimization. The problems of the coreless actutor and the Loney's solenoid belong to mono-objective optimization while the problem of the repulsion agency belongs to mutli-objective optimization. With respect to the methods used in the optimization,this paper introduces two, the direct one and the indirect one. The direct method is using the pattern search optimization algorithm and the indirect method is using a method that combines the artificial neural network model and the pattern search optimization algorithm.This paper uses the finite element software ANSYS as the basis of the electromagnetic field computation. The ANSYS process can be used in the optimization algorithm after secondary development, in order to achieve the general approach to the optimal design of the electromagnetic devices.
