With well composed structure and comparatively huge lifting capacity, all terrain cranes operate on many kinds of road condition. But their multi-axle chassis not only make it difficult to steering, but also run a high risk of losing stability when steering at high speed. So it is of great significance to study steering characters of all terrain cranes. This paper established a steering system model of all terrain cranes. Based on vehicle theory and Lagrange analysis method, a 3-DOF linear differential equation of steering motion was obtained. This paper also deduced parameters which have impacts on steering performance by analyzing stable steering features. By applying Matlab/Simulink, their impacts on steering performance are obtained. In addition, this paper discussed evaluation indicators for transient response and studies parameters which have influence on transient steering characters. Meantime, transient responses of different steering strategies were discussed. By conducting quantities analysis on each steering strategy, their application scope was obtained, which provides reference for the study of the steering system of all terrain cranes.
