The energy crisis and environmental pollution all around the world caused by the sharp increase of the cars ownership have attracted attention from all sectors of the society. Every government has developed more and more strict emission regulations. Electric vehicle has the zero emission and pollution characteristics have become the research hotspot. But electric vehicle which is enslaved to the low energy density and higher cost of the battery is difficult to obtain the popularization at this stage.The traditional hybrid vehicle is still dependent on fossil fuels, although it can optimize the work area of the engine to reduce the fuel consumption. Extended range electric vehicle is the excellent vehicle type transit from traditional hybrid models to electric vehicle, which has simple system structure and suitable vehicle mileage can reduce the consumption of fossil fuel.This paper consults massive materials to summarize the technical characteristics and the development of the extended range electric vehicle. According to the experiment data, the bus driving cycle of Kunming city has been constructed with short stroke method in Matlab. The powertrain of the extended range electric bus has been completed by analyzing the characteristics of the bus cycle of Kunming city and the vehicle performance requirements.The ’constant torque-variable speed’ control strategy has been proposed which though analysing the four kinds of working mode and the traditional control strategy characteristic of extended range electric bus. On the basis of the design requirements of extended range electric bus, the flow chart of the ’constant torque-variable speed and dynamic coordination control strategy’has been drawn. In order to make the engine follow the target speed quickly and accurately, the single neuron PID controller of the engine speed has been designed. After that, this paper introduces the advanced simulation software (Cruise), where the extended range electric bus model established in. Make the dynamic performance simulation after the control strategies and the cycle run into Cruise. The simulation result shows that the parameter matching and control strategy designed is correct which provides the reference for the development of extended range electric bus.
