The thesis thoroughly analyzed the mechanism and the character of runaway protection and quitting runaway transient process for hydraulic turbines, gave and compared the merits and defects of some runaway protection measure, and also discussed the feasibility of drainage under runaway operating condition. Based on the theory of Internal Character Analysis, the calculating method and program on hydraulic turbine with movable blade quitting runaway by moving blade and hydraulic turbine quitting runaway by closing draft tube gate fleetly are given respectively. The quitting runaway process of Baigou Unit is calculated as an example, and the merits and defects of both methods are compared. In addition, the singular point operating condition of quitting runaway transient process is studied, and Mockridge Loss during the transient process of hydraulic turbine is discussed. The field test of transient process on auto-close of guide vane under no load (runaway) operating condition is done on two Francis turbines, and the speed of the turbine at zero flow rate when guide vane is auto-closed at a fixed speed under no load operating condition is gotten by similarity conversion formula with the speed of the turbine at zero flow rate when guide vane is auto-closed at a another fixed speed under no load operating condition. The calculating result is compared with test result, and the correction of the similarity conversion formula which is derived by deduction in the thesis is proved.
