Soft soil need be disposed in order to meet the strength and displacement of foundation under the upper construction. The results of disposition are cared, engineers can examine them with many means. But there are some disadvantages among the ways used now because they can not examine the effect across-the-board with a few test spots. So a new method is needed which should be quick and all-sided. The study on Rayleigh wave characteristics in layered soil shows that shear wave velocity of soil can be attained from the Raylegh wave velocity. It is well known that there is relationship between shear wave velocity and characteristics of soil. So Rayleigh wave method can be used to reflect the characteristics of soil which is non-intrusive,quick,economical.Rayleigh wave method is applied in projects more and more, however just determines the nature of soil. However the amount of shear strength, the degree of consolidation are needed in projects. Under this background,in this paper,a relationship between shear strength and shear wave velocity is built to estimate the characteristics of foundation soil with amount. The relationship is based on the non-linear elasticity of foundation soil and the theory of Mohr-Couloumb strength. It is simple to determine the shear strength of soil foundation with a few parameters of soft soil.In this paper,a project is used to show the applicablity of the relationship between shear strength of soft soil and shear wave velocity which can make up the disadvantage of Rayleigh wave method just to determine the nature of soil.
