In recent 10 years, a raPid expansion have been seen in the growth of the numberand range of aPplication of cable and membrane structures. This thesis inifoduces thehistory material, structural style and analysis method of cable and membranestructures.Cable and membrane structuTes are fOrmed by rigid suPporting system and cables,Which make the membrane pre-stressed so as to bear the loads. A set of prescribedstress can't make the structures resist loads only if it is in equilibrium. The first step ofdesign of cab1e and membrane smictures is shaPe analysis. A selfequilibrating stresssystem must be found. Force density method is deve1oped for form finding. Thisthesis d erived t he e quation o f force d ensity m ethod' D isPersion i s t he k ey of formfinding using force density method. TWo aPproaches of disPersion with force densitymethod in fOrm finding of cable and membrane are derived in this thesis. Programsare comPiled based on the theoryThe joillting must guarantee the smoothly transfer of stress. Because of the greatstress, it is importam to design the joint careful1y Wrinkle will aPpear in case ofimproper design of joint. This thesis also introduces some kinds of the jointing ofcable and membrane strucfores.An open-air palestra has been designed in this thesis. The force density methodhas been used to analyze the shaPe, and the nonlinear finite method has been used toanalysis the loads.
