In the research field of surface integrity, the study on effect of surface roughness on functional properties of work surface is poor. For this reason, fractal analysis was used to study the wear resistance, bearing capability and lubricant retention property of machined surfaces in this paper. After introducing fractal theory and its foundation, the feasibility and advantages of fractal analysis for surface characterization were presented. The calculation and physical properties of fractal dimension D and amplitude coefficient C were also presented. In the study of the wear resistance, friction coefficient and wearing quantity were mainly investigated, and their changing tendency in a tribological process was made clear through experiments. The relations between them and fractal parameters were built up. It was shown that the coefficient C is suitable to evaluate the wear resistance of a machined surface.Based on re-classification of Abbott-Firestone curve into three zones, surface bearing index, core fluid retention index and valley fluid retention index were introduced to evaluate the bearing capability and lubricant retention property of a machined surface. The changing tendency of these three indexes was also made clear through experiments, and the relations between them and fractal parameters were built up. At last,it was found that the coefficient C is also suitable to evaluate the bearing capability and fluid retention property of a machined surface.
