The ship's manoeuvring simulator is based on the computer techniques combined with the ship's hydro-dynamics, simulating sea states in various sea areas, various types of ships and its controlling system, providing real-life scenes by day or by night, which integrates Radar, ARPA and piloting functions to reach the aim of simulating training. It has more than 13 years since the first ship's manoeuvring simulator came into existence in 1967. At present, over 100 agencies in over 30 countries apply the simulator into education and training. Some European and American countries are even trying to use the simulator training to replace the seafarer's ocean-going experiences. It has not only caught the fancy of the international shipping circles but is regarded highly by the IMO as well. In the convention of STCW 78/95, IMO lays emphasis on the function of the maritime simulator and has made corresponding compulsory and recommending rules as to the maritime simulator training.According to the statistics, about 80% of the sea accidents were caused by human factors. Therefore, it's urgent for us to reduce the affection of the human factors. Researching and applying the ship's manoeuvring simulator are to solve this problem. It has such characteristics as high proficiency, low cost, safety in training and easy operation. It helps to improve the seafarers' ability of adapting to various marine environment and dealing with all kinds of accidents and also plays an active part in ensuring the safety at sea, preventing crew's injury and death, avoiding damage to the marine environment and loss of properties, especially in the prevention of accidents caused by human factors. The main purpose is for the training of maritime students, professional crew, VTS operators and navigational management personnel. The procedure of the ship's manoeuvring simulator consists of eightcontinuous stages, which are power on, activating the server, switching on the instructor's machine, switching on the own ship's power supply and projector, setting or editing exercises, starting running, training and evaluation and power off. According to the requirements of the STCW and the syllabus of the maritime proficiency test and evaluation as well as the syllabus of "the relative major and special training test and evaluation", I made a deep research into the procedures of the ship's manoeuvring simulator and made an investigation of the system's present situation in maritime research centers and universities home and abroad. It is found, through analysis, that there exist in various simulator training two major problems of auto breakdown and how to continue running after suspension. These two problems will not only be time consuming and make training broken but also will affect the result of the training and simulating. Therefore, how to solve the problems is the key point in the application of various simulators. It is put forward here that the first step to solve these two problems is to solve the break-point memory techniques in program running, which means to apply the conception of computer break and the design ideas of running break-point memory techniques in solving the two major problems to make the simulator training smooth and complete and finally to ensure the best exertion of the ship's manoeuvring simulator's functions.
