The behavior of wheel/rail contacts is more important problem in railway systems. An analysis of the wheel/rail rolling contact on nonideal boundary condition is able to open out the reasons of rail contact fatigue. So, it is important for improving the safety and reducing the cost of railway transportation.Considering the real wheel/rail geometry and boundary condition, the distribution of elastic-plastic stress in the rail-joint, the effect of the inclusion and crack in the rail surface on the distribution of elastic-plastic stress in railhead are analyzed by using software ANSYS.The effect of lateral displacement on the distribution of elastic-plastic stress and strain in rail-joint is been analyzed. The wheel/rail contact on rail-joint is line/area contact so that the rail joint has great elastic-plastic strain. Finally, rail break in the rail-joint.Inclusion on the rail surface has great influence on the distribution of the elastic-plastic stress and strain in railhead. The calculation show that the maximum stress around inclusion in the rail surface is 1.02~2.05 times of that without inclusion. And the plastic strain around the inclusion is the reasons of the eroded spot on the rail surface. To the crack in the rail surface, the effect of longitudinal location on the distribution of the elastic-plastic stress and strain in the railhead is calculated. The maximum stress around the crack in the rail surface over the yield stress and the steel around the crack has plastic strain. All above work is using to reveal the mechanism of wheel/rail contact fatigue breakage.
