The precise location of high-voltage transmission line fault is of great significance and practical engineering value. For years, general importance has been attached to the study of faults location by the network operation and management departments and specialists. But owing to the short development history of faults location techniques and the limits of related techniques, fault location devices with high precision are not widely used in practice. With the development of computer communication technology and the wide application of microcomputer-based protection devices with electric power system, it is possible to locate high-voltage transmission line faults precisely. This thesis, through the study and analysis of the present fault location methods, comments on their respective advantages and disadvantages.Second, this thesis presents a new algorithm for locating fault place of HV transmission line based on the distributed parameters. The good astringency has been proved within the whole line length in principle. This algorithm doesn't need to choose the true from all the roots, and doesn't need synchronized data and can eliminate the influence of the fault resistances. Third, this thesis presents a fault location method on two point's different phase short circuit fault. This method only uses relaying dataand two terminal data which are sampled before fault occurs. Finally, based on the above, this thesis develops a relevant software of fault location. Meanwhile, to verify the validity of the algorithm and test the factors influential to its precision, this thesis performs a great number of simulation computations. And the simulation results indicate both the validity and the high precision of this algorithm.
