This dissertation describes a theoretical and experimental study on the ultimate strength of national rolled H-shape columns under compressive loading. An elastic-plastic and geometrically nonlinear finite element method is developed to analyze ultimate strength of H-shape steel columns under axial compressive loading. Initial imperfections including residual stress due to hot-rolled and initial overall deflections of columns are considered. An experiment study of 21 H-shape steel columns with slenderness parameter of ranging from 40 to 120 is conducted to verify the theory results. Based on the above analysis and tests, Finally, by means of engineering finite element software ANSYS, to compute ultimate strength of H-shape steel's with slenderness parameter of ranging from 20 to 200 whose total number of column is 114, including 6 kinds of cross-section size, the formula about relationship between stability factor and slenderness parameter have been established which is primarily formula for designing structural steel column strength. In addition, by means of the mathematics methods, the article introduce to correction coefficient on the current formula in China standard GBJ17-88 for the design purposes that actual application is more convenience to engineer.
