1. A new idea using composite material to biuld space structures is presented. The finite element methods of composite cables, composite laminated plates, composite beams, composite stiffened plates, composite sandwich plates, composite shells and textile composite structures are discussed. These theories lay a foundation for the finite element method of the analysis of the static and the dynamic properties of the composite space structures. Then the performance of the composite space structures is preliminarily analysed using the finite element methods. Through the calculation and the experiment, the case that the composite space structures can stride across a large span is demonstrated and the composite space structure will be the ideal space structure in the future.2. A method combining some of the composite space structural simulation, wavelet analysis, fuzzy mathematical, genetic algorithm, artificial intelligence, expert system, vibration diagnosis, acoustic sounding, supersonic flaw detection, radioscopy, infra-red detection and so on to diagnose the composite structure damage is discussed. The intelligent damage diagnosis system that is built by combining vibration diagnosis, waveletanalysis, fuzzy mathematical, neural network and so on is discussed emphatically. The comparison between the calculated and experimental results show that the intelligent damage diagnosis system of the composite space structure provides a effective method for the damage diagnosis of composite space structures.
