| Traditional geological prospecting methods (i.e. SH-30 drilling machine) are reliable, but they need heavy equipment, long work period and high cost. And the geological data thus acquired can only represent engineering geological properties of a certain dot. Even if boreholes are densified, it is difficult to evaluate the whole engineering site in large area. With the enlargement of urban construction scale and infrastructure development, a new exploration method is expected to supplement those traditional methods.Rayleigh wave exploration is a new method for geotechnical engineering exploration in recent years. Compared with traditional methods, it has many advantages such as convenience, high efficiency and low cost. Civil engineers have been paying more and more attention to it.This paper consists of three sections, In the first section, the history of Rayleigh waves is introduced in detail and some problems unsolved are pointed out. In section two, the theory of Rayleigh waves is discussed and a matrix method for elastic wave problem - Knopoff Method is introduced. Finally, in section three, Rayleigh wave exploration method is used in a practical project - Northern stone material trade market. The embedded depth of cobble substratum of the whole site, and the regression equation between the test blow count (N63) standard penetration and the surface wave velocity (VR) are obtained in the process. A good case study is provided for the practice of the subjected method in this section. As a new exploration method, the Rayleigh wave exploration method still has many problems and demands further studies, due to the deficiency of its calculation theory and the sophistication of engineering circumstances. |
