Lamilloy is a new cooling technology which has advantage of combining film cooling, internal impingement, large internal heat transfer area and enhanced heat exchange by pin fin array. The resistance and cooling characteristics of lamilloy were investigated with experimental and numerical methods in this paper.In the part of resistance investigation, four typical configurations of laminate plates were made and tested in a wind tunnel and the internal flow resistances were obtained. The experimental results indicated that the resistances of laminate plate were mainly determined by the ratio of the hole area to the plate, and the bigger the ratio, the smaller the resistance. The other geometries such as height of the channel, internal configuration are secondary importance.In the part of cooling characteristics investigation, these four laminate plates were tested in a large scale low speed close-looped wind tunnel and the cooling effectiveness were obtained. The experimental results showed that very high effectiveness can be achieved by using lamilloy and area ratio of the hole will play the most important role in determination of cooling effectiveness.Numerical simulation were conducted to calculate large model lamilloy with two types of internal flow patterns, three pin shapes and internal channel heights. The complex flow fields and flow resistances were obtained and the effects of internal flow pattern, pin shape and height on lamilloy flow resistance were investigated. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data.In the last part, coupled fluid/solid heat transfer calculation was performed to obtain the cooling effectiveness of these four laminate plates, the numerical results showed the agreement with the experimental data were fairly good, but large discrepancies existed in some occasions.
