The theoretical calculation method about how to predict the hydrodynamic characteristics of Ichthyoid Rudder is proposed in this paper. Compared to an ordinary rudder, the value of lift coefficient of Ichthyoid Rudder is about 30% higher and the maximum rudder angle of it nearly reaches 45 degrees. Ichthyoid Rudder is a design under such a conception as to effectively utilize the propellers slipstream for rudder action, and featured by having a fish-shaped one-piece construction that is to say-no part of Ichthyoid Rudder can move in the water. So it can increase the arch and the hydrodynamic function.There are two emphases in the paper, namely, theoretical calculation and design of experiment.In the first part, the steady nonlinear vortex lattice method is adopted to calculate the hydrodynamic characteristics of open water Ichthyoid Rudder, and the induced velocity of Ichthyoid Rudder is calculated using panel method. The results of the lift interference are given here as a result of a series of rudder of different aspect ration fitted to different location of the fornication.In the second part, the device of open water experiment of Ichthyoid Rudder is present. In addition, the data needed to survey and the equation concerned is given. The elements that affect the hydrodynamic characteristics of Ichthyoid Rudder are analyzed. At the same time, the result of calculation and that of the experiment is compared. It shows: the method of this paper is correct and the result of this calculation is reliable.
