Active magnetic bearing (AMB) is a typical mechtronic product, it is a novel type, high performance bearing. AMB has a number of outstanding characteristics, such as no friction, no wear, no pollution and long service life, is beyond of rolling and film element bearing. Air bearing has a lot of absolute advantages when it is used in high speed bearing, low friction and low wastage, high precision bearing and special conditions. AMB and Foil air bearing has its inherent shortages when it is used alone. Now we unite AMB with air bearing (AMB-AB) to overcome their shortages. It is a new technology in bearing field, it will more superior than AMB and air bearing.Many international experts have done research in AMB-AB, but the air bearing occupying a long axis space. The rotor's dynamics performance is depressed. A new type AMB-AB was brought forward in this paper, the film air bearing was integration in AMB. The axis space is saved and the rotor's dynamics performance is improved. So, it is definitely different from other AMB-AB.Three aspects have been studied theoretically in this paper which were based on an analysis of a compliant multleaf journal self-acting air bearing, which are as follows:(1) A set of theoretical analysis method which include the development of .physical and mathematical model, the solution of governing equations and theprediction of static and dynamic performance of the foil gas bearing is proposed. The above theoretical analysis method provides a possibility for numerical analysis.(2) The foil bearing is treated as a continuous flexible surface which is supported on an elastic foundation. The stiffness and damping of the film are assumed to be liner and constant everywhere. The fluid is modeled by using the Reynolds equation for a compressible gas.(3) The effects of the bearing parameters on the bearing performance have been numerically analyzed using finite element method. A finite element formulation has been developed. The numerical analysis of finite element has been realized with Matlab language. The calculation results explore the mechanism of the foil bearing which is different from that of traditional bearing, and predict the high performance of the foil bearing which is high load capacity, small friction loss and high stability.
