The technique of using the split columns to improve the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete short columns is further investigated from two hands. One is research on choice and optimization of clapboard materials of split columns, the other is research on technique of construction of split columns. Firstly, after the experimental research on the seismic performance and ductility of split columns caulked the joint with several different clapboard materials, split columns with hollow joint, and full section column under cyclic loading, the detailed comparison and analysis had been carried out on the development of crack, the maximum strength, failure feature, energy dissipation, ductility, and stiffness degradation etc.... It can be concluded that the split columns must be caulked with some clapboard material. It is also can be discovered that the seismic performance and the ductility the split columns caulked with gesso clapboard are best even if the seismic performance and the ductility are wonderful while the split columns are caulked with gesso clapboard, fibreboard or asbestine board, and the split columns can use many clapboard materials according to the requirements of construction.Secondly, after the full-scale construction experiments on the split columns with gesso clapboard and bamboo plywood, some characteristics, shock resistance, bearing capacity and water resistant capacity of different clapboard materials under the practical construction had been studied. It can be concluded that the general gesso clapboard can not act as the clapboard of split columns but the bamboo plywood is perfect. At the same time, the construction technique of split columns is discussed and the construction requirements for split columns are proposed according to the possible problems encountered during the construction of split columns. Thirdly, after the comparison of axis compression test on two split columns and one full section column, the damage process and the axis compression bearing capacity were analyzed. It is observed that each of split columns can not be destroyed one by one under axis compression loading, and the damage process and the axis compression bearing capacity of split columns are the same as that of the full section column. Then, the calculational method on the bearing capacity of split columns under axial compression is brought up.
