This paper presents the application of a genetic algorithm for the optimal design of radial distribution systems. In order to make radial distribution networks from a non-radial primary network, the genetic algorithm starts with Parallel Breadth-Depth First Randomly Search Algorithm, furthermore, original operators of the genetic algorithm have been developed in order to obtain global optimal solutions and improve the run times. When the algorithm is connected with geographic Information Systems, it is going to be more successful and progressive. Adopting excellent GIS software-Maplnfo, the paper introduce that we can turn common map into registering grid table, and make vector layer. The algorithm has been implemented by MapBasic which is the secondary developing language of Maplnfo. The total program includes four modules which is planning interface, distribution Systems planning, network analyzing and query-statistic. Of course, each module achieves specifically function, and they belong to planning interface, which is an application projectfile. The algorithm of distribution systems planning module is genetic algorithm. The display of the planning process adapts new methods which make it intuitionistic and perspicuity. The distribution system planning software is not only simple but also operating. By means of linking genus modules, the functions of the software can be extended easily.
