Vehicle diesel engine is a complicated system. The performance of diesel engine is influenced by many factors and the influence of all kinds of factors to the performance of diesel engine is much non-linear. Analyzing the influence factors of the performance of diesel engine, the author created a ANN model for predicting the steady state performance of diesel engine and wrote visual program. The input parameters of the model are engine speed and fuel consumption, and output parameters are power, BSFC, exhaust temperature and smoke. LF4108Q D.I. diesel engine was experimented with and the performance experiment data was gained. Then the ANN was trained with the performance experiment data. The performance of other operating conditions was predicted by the ANN that had been trained. The result of predicting and the result of experimenting were compared to prove thecapability of the ANN. Universal characteristics of the diesel engine were predicted with the ANN that had been proved, and the universal characteristics curves were plotted. The example indicates that the ANN model for predicting the steady state performance of diesel engine created by the author can predict the performance of the diesel engine, and that predicting the performance of the diesel engine with ANN is feasible, and that studying the performance of the diesel engine with ANN is a novel method.
