Virtual System Framework is an internet/intranet based system integrated platform, which supports real-time data transferring among distributed computers with different architectures, as well as string-based remote process call(RPC).This paper demonstrates the definition of Virtual System Framework (VSF), as well as VSF's architecture and mechanism, which comes from the developing experiences and lessons of the State Key Laboratory of Automobile Dynamic Simulation. In addition, the realization of VSF on Win32 platform is introduced. We also build a computing example to test its running mechanism and efficiency.Real-time vehicle dynamic simulation is an intersection of vehicle dynamics theory and advanced computer technique. It is not only valuable for vehicle dynamics research, but also very critical in advanced driving simulator to create high fidelity, operator-in-the-loop vehicle simulation, which serve as a flexible research tool used for a wide variety of applications and a key facility in forming independent automotive develop capability. However, there are some big challenges in this field, such as the development of novel and robust numerical method, the application and spread of simulation techniques, and the utilization of Internet distributed environment, etc. So the State Key Laboratory of Automobile Dynamic Simulation has launched a great project with the topic "Virtual System Framework", an advanced software framework to support Internet distributed real-time simulation and simulation-based vehicle design.The primary research objectives of the "Virtual System Framework" include the following three aspects:Providing support for advanced numerical method to meet the time-critical challenge of complicated vehicle system dynamic simulation, as well as the requirements of structure-oriented modeling method.Providing well designed framework architecture and user-friendly interface to pull model developers with mechanical background out of the boring simulation programming details. Thus, most engineers with engineering background and only a little programming knowledge can use VSF to verify and improve their design ideas.Providing internal support for Internet so that we can make best use of the distributed professional research and computing resources to perform simulation and simulation-based design through Internet, which is especially critical to vehicle-like complex system.The main research job of this paper is listed below:Based on advanced theory of system simulation and with reference to the research experience in real-time vehicle dynamic simulation of the State Key Laboratory of Automobile Dynamic Simulation, we conclude the real-time data interaction mechanism among simulation models, and then demonstrates the definition of Virtual System Framework, its function and architecture, as well as the running mechanism of VSF. On the whole, VSF can be divided into two parts: VSF Server side. VSF Server side provides most services of VSF. It includes several simulation workstations and one web server.VSF Client side. VSF Client side uses the services VSF Server provides. It includes Web-base Client and console-based VSF Cmd Shell.Facing toward grid computing, we make a basic exploration about the application of XML in describing simulation models and dynamic configuration of user test. Three document type definitions including user module description, simulating host description and user test configuration, are defined to help in initializing and running phrase.We defines running mechanism and flow of all the modules in VSF, and also we realize it under Win 32 platform with various advanced windows programming techniques such as windows DLL, windows socket and windows multithread, etc.After successfully integrating VSF, we use typical example to have a test with its mechanism and efficiency.
