An electric power steering can take a multi-object control according to the status of the automobile movements and the driver's requirements. Under the multi-object control, the stronger road feel, and more slightly steering power can be gotten, and better return stability, return speed ,better anti-jamming capability, anti-jamming and quicker responses to driver's input can be achieved, too.The experimentation of torsion spring's stiff and the torque sensor characteristic is performed. Assist characteristic is obtained on the test-bed .In this paper, the dynamic model of the electric power steering has been established. According to assist curve , the assist controller is designed mainly with feed-forward control, back-forward control, lead-lag compensator and other control measures. The dynamic simulation of the ESP system with assist controller has been obtained by Matlab language. The results showed that the steering power was smaller, steering stability was better and the bandwidth was more suitable in this system than in the system without assist controller. Compensation controller has been designed to improve the return characteristic of the system and to reduce the influences of friction, inertia , and damping of the electric motor. The compensation controller improves the return characteristic and return speed of the system. Then a stronger road feel can be gotten , and the optimization steering return and the automobile return speed can be gotten from the low speed to the high speed.
