Through studying the fault locating methods used domestically and abroad , the advantages, disadvantages and problems of various fault locating algorisms are summarized. Their applications scopes and limitations are pointed out. Two fault locating methods with strong practicality feasibility are introduced. In this paper, a new transmission line fault location system is introduced. Along a faulty transmission line transient traveling waves do appear. Collecting and recording accurately the time of transient zero-sequence current traveling waves and zero-sequence voltage traveling on faulty line based on GPS system. The system using the zero sequence current signal and zero sequence voltage signal at both ends processes fault location, it eliminates the appreciable error which is caused by the fault reactance when dealing with the fault location on the High-Voltage transmission.Based on this principle, a new device for fault location of transmission line has been developed . The paper first expound the principle of the traveling waves, then introduces the hardware figure, the device adopts the GPS system which provide the precision time for the both ends. The fourth-class introduces the flow chare of hardware and software. This device has the features of high accuracy and convenient handling and will have a broad application future in power system.
