Piles used in bridge abutments and embankments are inevitably subjected to horizontal load caused by unbalanced fills. Engineers often pay little attention to the checking computations of pile horizontal bearing capability in tall buildings constructed in soft ground. In metallurgy workshop, piles often bend heavily due to overload.The main contents of this paper list as follows:Firstly, horizontal bearing capability and deformation behaviors of single piles, pile head load distribution in pile group and calculation method of internal force in every pile are summarized in detail.Secondly, the influence of overload on adjacent piles is studied. The simplified analytical method is presented. Lastly, some useful conclusions are given.1. The assumption that soils nearby pile body approach Rankine soil pressure limit equilibrium states at same time is not reasonable;2. The trouble of depth effect of soil pressure is overcome in author's simplified analytical method. The net soil pressure on pile body equals to qz~4cu. qz is vertical extra soil pressure and cu is undrained shear strength of clay. The maximum net soil pressure (also the horizontal load on pile) equals to flow soil pressure 7.0 cu.3. The failure of deep-seated soft ground is the direct factor in the overlarge lateral movement of pile body. Firstly, we should reinforce the soft ground. In the early stage of piles design, we can cast high-strength concrete in steel pipe piles or adopt high pressure jetting to reinforce the soils between the piles. Cement Fix Piles reinforcing measure is preferred.4. The checking computations of pile horizontal bearing capability in soft ground should arise more attention. The appropriate analytical model, full consideration of disadvantaged short-term load combination, detailed monitoring arrangement process, comparable engineering experiences are all necessary.
