with the rapid development of high grade highway construction in our country, specially extending to the mountain area, soil pressure, deformation, settlement and craze problems of culverts under the high-stacked soil have already raised common concern of quarters concerned. How to calculate soil pressure of culverts exactly, and how to adopt the engineering measures to reduce soil pressure around culverts, adjust the soil pressure at lognitudinal and horizontal distributing, reduce or dissolve settlement difference between culvert body and side fill artificially, above problems should be resolved by us. Therefore, their research has important actual meaning. This study has culvert A ,B and a set of models as experimental segments, and adopts EPS as reducing-load materials to research rigid culverts applied in civil engineering. Main research contents about culverts which have reducing-load measures or not, and have but different EPS thickness are as follows: magnitude and distribution of vertical soil pressure on the top of culverts and their change with fill height; magnitude and distribution of horizontal soil pressure on the side walls of culverts and their change with fill height; magnitude of settlement difference between culvert body and side fill and their change with fill height. Through above experimental research and data analysis, main reseach results can be gained as follows:1. Acquire settlement difference ±δ key parameter between inner fill column and outer fill column from practical measure, also confirm that ±δ is a compositive parameter that can reflect all influence factors of vertical soil pressure surely. At the same time, the accuracy of experimental project can be confirmed.2. Express that laying EPS on the top and sides of culverts has remarkable effect of reducing-load, and its effect of reducing-load becomes increase with the thickness of EPS gradually, but extent decrease gradually. In the experimental condition same as the culverts, it is enough to lay 7~8cm and 4~5cm EPS on the top and sides of culverts respectively.3. Compared with measure data, the calculation results of vertical soil pressure of culverts by the limited element method are comparatively near. At the same time, it's reflected that having EPS or not and thickness of EPS have great influence on vertical soil pressure of culverts, this point is in accordance with practical measure results. From transform cloud diagram ,we can see, having EPS or not , thickness of EPS and terrain condition have influence on ±δ.4. According to the calculation data of experimental culverts, Calculation results of all kinds of theories formula, experience method about soil pressure of culverts are compared with measure data. Merits and shortcomings of these methods are discussed, and formulas that solve soil pressure of culverts are suggested.5. Through theories deducing, calculation formulas about horizontal soil pressure in the condition of having reducing-load material EPS are put forward. Accordingly, prevenient theories and methods are perfected. This text results can be provided for culverts engineering design, also can be used as revision basis of design criterion and manual of relevant section.
