As a new composite retaining structure, reinforced cement-soil retaining wall has many advantages in technology, economy and environment. But both theory and design method for it are far behind practice. Therefore, the working mechanism of reinforced cement-soil retaining wall was studied by experiment and finite element method in this paper, and a design method was summarized.The compressive strength and the elastic modulus of cement-soil mixture in Tianjin district, as well as the relations between strength and its influence factors, were measured by the experiment of material characteristic. The load-distortion relation of the composite structure and the distribution and variety of stress and strain in the material, as well as the working characteristic of the specimens, were studied by the model test on the reinforced cement-soil beams.The sinking law of small steel shapes was reached by the experiment performed during the construction of the reinforced cement-soil retaining wall in Tianjin district. The distribution and variety of stress in the steel shapes and the finial displacement of the retaining wall was measured by the test on the actual reinforced cement-soil retaining wall, besides the working mechanism of the composite structure was analyzed. The limit friction stress between steel shapes and cement-soil mixture in Tianjin district was gained by the pulling out experiment.The working characteristic of the composite structure and the interaction mechanism between steel shapes and cement-soil mixture were studied by the finite element analysis on the reinforced cement-soil retaining wall. Based on the achievements of experiments and finite element analysis, the analytical models of vertical direction of the reinforced cement-soil retaining wall was supposed, and the formulas for carrying capacity and displacement calculating were derived theoretically. Then, according to the existent achievement, the design method on the reinforced cement-soil retaining wall was summarized totally.
