According with the code, building structures are designed under a common vertical and seismic load. But we all know, there is always a higher moment on one side of the beams and a low one on the other side when the frame subject to a heavy vertical load. The damage mechanism of the frame may be changed in this condition. Think about this changes caused by heavy vertical load, we have analyzed three group of typical RC frame to know about the latent rule. In accordance with the aim of analysis, nonlinear dynamic analyze has been down through the IDARC program under different magnitude of vertical load. The result of analysis show that there is more yield hinges on the top tow storey columns of 6-storey frame7. It means that the heavy vertical load go against to the beam hinges mechanism of frame. The same conclusions can be got from the contrast of 6-storey frame8 and 10-storey frame8 under the different vertical loads. But the influences of heavy vertical load tend to decrease. For beam elements, the damage index increased by the rised vertical load. From the response of the whole frame, the maximum lateral displacement and drift of frame keep constant. From the result of analysis, the increased vertical load will not influence the whole behavior of RC frame. The work that we have done contribute to real building structure design and research in this field, especially for the study with IDARC program.
