Buildings, constructed with walls by human being, witness the history of civilization. Nowadays, the looks of "wall" become increasingly rich and colorful, but techniques haven't got great improvement. The worse problem is that certain superb techniques and skills are even lost. Especially in the landscape-designing world, some designers are keen on pursuing peculiar styles and novel idea, and on wild imagination of significance and application, instead of paying close attention to the space. While some turn to the relative determinacy with the help of geometry, and focus on the planes, ignoring the key vertical elements that play definite role of space definition and enclosure. Based on the above, the thesis illustrates those vertical elements, and summarizes the author's own idea by summing up and analyzing existing researches. This thesis, by means of systemic analysis, profoundly discusses the various factors of walls in details. All the researches here are carried out on the basis of space system. At the same time the thesis analyses how walls come to space and sequence and fatherly illustrates the space forms of walls, by employing an additional mythology- processing analysis. The thesis, firstly, defines the range of wall involving vertical components that play important dividing and limiting role in landscape space. And then it discusses those components in three aspects including the wall in space context, sequence and edge. The wall in the edge pays close attention to the objective elements in form and looks into the coordinating and harmonious relation between landscape and the environment by means of shape, size, void and solid, composition. The wall in space context focuses on the elements existing in the mutual relationship and expresses the space characters of landscape by means of light and shadow, color, texture and scale. The wall in space sequence illustrates the characters affecting the structure of the sequence, and the mutual transitional relationship between sections in order to present the function of wall in the array.
