Some basic issues are discussed regarding the design of composite beams. It includes the strength of stud shear connectors, effective flange width of the composite beams under elastic and ultimate state.First, having analyzed the data of many testing results got from local and overseas, the effect factors of the stud connectors are studied. The mechanics modular and statistical strength formulas are established for the connectors. Second, with the finite element method (FEM), more than four hundred composite beams are analyzed and the statistical formulas are established for the effective flange width of composite beams under elastic state. The formulas are compared with design codes of twelve countries. Finally, on the basis of studying the re-distribution of stress in the composite beams under ultimate state, the formulas for the effective flange width of composite beams under ultimate state are established.
