With the development of reconstruction project for distribution networks, the higher requirement of distribution system automation technique is put forward in the distribution management system(DMS). Fault section diagnosis(FSD) is one of the kernel function of distribution automation, which require the FSD with better generality, simplicity, fast and exact solving. That is the important work this paper will do. Because the complexity of the topology structure of DS(distribution systems),the multiple operating mode of DS,the particularity of the dynamic discrete event description during fault in the DS, the application of PN(Petri nets)in the FSD(fault section diagnosis) is restricted. On the basis of sufficient mastery to domestic and foreign study status of FSD, the existent problems of all kinds of principle and method are analyzed in essence. In this paper, a new approach of the FSD for DS is proposed, which is developed based on Petri Nets in combination with RCT(redundant correcting technique). First the FTS (fault topology structure) is built adaptively based on the RCT through the information analysis of SCADA system from FTU(feeder terminal unit) before and after the fault. The RCT is used for the correcting information distorted in the real-time fault information. Secondly according to the electrical measure in FTS, the terminal FTU in FTS is confirmed and locked which is used as building the Petri nets for the solving of FSD. So the problem of FSD is changed into the FSD of locking the single FTU. In the process of FSD, for the first time the twice redundant correcting technique is applied. It overcomes the miscarriage of justice by the aberrance information. The approach studied has better generality, simplicity, fast and exact solving. It is effective to enhance the fault tolerant performance of FSD.
