In the paper, the author reviews the developmental history of the automatic control theory, from which that of the structural vibration control was derived. Based on the modern control theory, the intelligent control theory etc., considering the engineering practice, the author compared the structural response of semi-active control with that of passive control in every site condition .The results show that when the additional damping is low, the control effect of the former is better than the latter, this is the advantage of semi-active control when the actual additional damping is confined. Considering economic factor and technical factor, the semi-active control technology is the developmental trend of the structural vibration control.A method is proposed in this paper to improve the traditional TMD control method, in which a mass block is set on the top story and MR intelligent dampers are set on other stories, the genetic algorithm is used to determine the optimal control parameters that can bring about the best control effect. Then this method is compared with the traditional TMD control. The GA (genetic algorithm)- NN (neural network) structural system is trained off line by inputting many history or artificial earthquake waves of different periods and intensities, and the smart sensor is attained by recording the according control force of varied earthquake waves with the function of memory and information storage of NN. The anti-seismic intelligent system of the key building where the anti-seismic intensity is above seven has been put forward, connecting all smart sensors in the whole area by network. The key structures where the anti-seismic intensity is above seven have been adjusted greatly, the subordinate structures are divided from the main structures, and variable stiffness and damping control devices are set between them in the vertical directions, then the multi-story MR-TMD semi-active control system can be applied to the practical engineering.
