Reactive power distributing in reason is the precondition to voltage quality guarantee and power loss minimization. In electric power system, reactive power optimization is of consequence to economic and stability operation. This paper studies characteristics of various reactive power optimization methods; and it puts great emphasis on the analysis of the structure and the principle of particle swarm optimization. On this condition, the effect on optimization results which dues to the parameter of particle swarm optimization is researched to provide the experiential criterion to the parameter's selection. The paper not only improves the calculation method of particle's speed and spread it to the combination optimization, but also imports mutation theory of genetic algorithms to the traditional particle swarm optimization to remedy its defect in the global optimization. This mixed intelligent optimal approach strategy can be applied in reactive power optimization. It brings out the advantages of both algorithms and improves the performance of the optimization. In the end, the calculation and analysis of MiYun Power Grid certifies the correctness and practicability of the improved algorithm proposed in the paper.
