The ground faults in the generator stator are by far common faults to whichgenerators are subjected. Internal short-circuit faults, which may immediately damagegenerator, are always preceded by the ground faults. With the development of powersystem, the capacity of single generator is growing, and this demands higherperformance for large generator protective relay. The theory of protective relay lies onclear understanding of fault characteristics. To improve the performance of largegenerator protective relay, it is necessary to study more comprehensively the statorground faults of large generator. Based on this understanding, it may be easy to proposenew protection criterion and improve protective relay, and enrich and perfect largegenerator protective relay theory. Based on above, firstly the paper presents someresearch achievement on stator ground fault transient simulation of stator windings inlarge generators. The transient simulation program the paper presents is proven by alarge of simulation on an analog synchronous generator, which shows the same trend asthe existing laws. At last the paper tests the current 100% stator ground fault protectioncriterion.
